SUPERCHARGER COUPLER REPLACEMENT
Written by Harry Stone

First, you will need the following items:

  • New supercharger coupler   pic 1
  • 2 bottles of supercharger oil   pic 1
  • 15 MM socket with ratchet

  • 13 MM wrench (2)

  • 13 MM Deep socket

  • 6 to 8 inch extension for 3/8” ratchet

  • 10 MM socket

  • Razor scraper

  • Silicone sealant, black, red or blue

  • Torque wrench, if you have one

  • 5/16” allen wrench

  • Rubber mallet or dead blow hammer, or block of wood and hammer

  • If you’re not sure if your coupler is bad, remove the S/C belt and “rock” the pulley back and forth. You should not feel any play. If you don’t, your coupler is ok, if you do, follow the instructions to fix it.

Remove the engine cover, putting the plastic nut and oil filler tube back in place. Pic 2. Disconnect battery negative cable pic 3. Remove supercharger and accessory belts. This requires a 15 MM socket, the supercharger belt is removed by putting the socket/ratchet on the tensioner and tightening the bolt to release the tension pic 4. The accessory belt is removed by placing the 15 MM socket on the bolt and loosening the bolt to release tension pic 5. Remove stud attaching alternator to inner bracket pic 6. Remove 2 bolts holding alternator to long aluminum bracket pic 7, pic 20. Remove last bolt at bottom of alternator pic 9. Disconnect connector and battery cable from alternator pic 8. I used 2 13 MM wrenches(actually one is a ½” wrench), one to keep the post from turning and the other to loosen the nut. Remove and store the alternator pic 10. Now is the time to remove the supercharger oil. Using the 5/16” allen wrench, remove the plug in the snout pic 11. I used a MitiVac brake bleeding tool to suck the oil out pic 12, but you can use a cheap turkey baster too. The Supercharger snout is held on to the case with 10 MM bolts. I recommend removing the bolt that goes down into the lower manifold first. Loosen all the bolts up, there is one directly under the snout and one to the left of the one going down to the lower manifold pic 13. Remove all the bolts and put them somewhere safe. The snout probably won’t come off at this time. I should have placed a rag under the snout/case connection area to catch any spare oil( it was messy). Tap the end of the snout with the rubber hammer down and both sides, you should see the snout start to wiggle. Continue till you can remove the snout with you hands. If the section behind the snout starts to come out with the snout, stop at this point and separate the snout from the other section. I used a screwdriver to carefully pry between the 2. They separated easily. Pull the snout off the supercharger pic 14 and clean the old oil and residue out of both snout pic 15 and supercharger case. Remove the old coupler and install the new one, with the flared parts of the coupler holes towards the 3 pins on the S/C case. Clean both mating surfaces with a scraper, making sure not to nick the surface. Clean up any oil that leaked out and remove the rag you had put under the snout earlier. Use the silicone sealant on 1 surface, making sure to have a continous bead all the way around. Reinstall the snout, lining up the pins in the snout with the coupler, and push into place. Reinstall the bolts and snug them up, making sure not to cock the snout on the supercharger pic 16. Tighten and torque the bolts to 17 lb/ft, reinstall the bolt that goes into the lower manifold and torque it to same pic 17. Reinstall alternator, install stud into inner mount, 2 short bolts on back of alternator and finally the lower bolt, tighten all bolts securely pic 7, pic 18, pic 6, pic 9. Reconnect the connector and battery wire pic 19, pic 18, using the 2 wrench method to keep from twisting the stud. Reinstall accessory belt and supercharger belt, put the 2 bottles of new supercharger oil in supercharger snout pic 20 and install and tighten the plug pic 11. Remove the engine cover nut and oil tube, install the engine cover and secure the nut and oil tube. Reconnect the battery negative cable and you’re done!
