On the air tube between the airbox, and the entrance to the supercharger, there are 2 plastic 'chambers' attached- one above, and below...what are their function, and can they be removed, and plugged without anything going wrong ?

Been a while since I looked at a stock intake. I'm thinking they are "mufflers" to silence the sound of the intake. Nice quiet Buick, right?

so you got a 97 or a 98 dont ya? only 2 years that have that lame set up.
pretty sure those are to catch and hold water should you get into deep water, you know before you start eating the water.
be best to just rip that stock air box out, up grade to a 01 up box or just slap on a open cone diy set up.

They're tumors.
The LS trucks have similar things. It's at least partly to cancel out the intake noise - which really isn't much of a problem.

I cut them off at the neck, filed them flat, and epoxied flat plastic to them. Filed them round, and re-installed- and no difference at all in sound. Guess any water that gets in will hydrate my supercharger

a cheap ass diy open cone filter makes it sound damn good really. i still got my 98 box cause i dont toss stock parts out. never know when you might need em.
